Blackletter: Type and National Identity is a well-researched monograph companion to the recent exhibit (of the same name) at Cooper Unions The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. The exhibit was curated by the editors and prominent typographers Peter Bain & Paul Shaw. Blackletter explores the history of blackletter scripts, discusses contemporary digital decendants and questions the validity of its stereotypical associations. The monograph features informative essays by Philipp Th. Bertheau, Christopher Burke, Philipp Luidl, et al. with numbered illustrations and a timeline extending along the top of 50+ pages of the text that graphically pinpoints important events in the development of blackletter scripts from 915-1995 AD. A checklist of blackletter types from German foundries between 19001950, a bibliography and a brief glossary are also included.![]() | ![]() |
